Meaning

Invocation: To that Devi who abides in all beings in the form of the Mother — salutations to Her, salutations to Her, salutations to Her, again and again.

I bow to you, Mother Durga, giver of happiness; I bow to you, Mother Amba, remover of sorrow.

Your radiance is formless and limitless, and it fills all three worlds with light.

The moon adorns your vast forehead; your eyes are red, your brow fiercely knit.

Mother, your form is deeply enchanting — the mere sight of you fills your devotees with joy.

All the power of this world rests in you; you sustain it with food and wealth.

As Annapurna you nourish the world; you are also the primal, ever-young Sundari.

At the great dissolution you destroy all things; you are Gauri, beloved consort of Shiva.

Shiva and the yogis sing your praises; Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you always.

You take the form of Saraswati, granting wisdom that has saved the sages.

You took the form of Narasimha, appearing by splitting open a pillar.

You protected and saved Prahlada, and sent Hiranyakashipu to his end.

You take the form of Lakshmi in this world, resting beside Lord Narayana.

You dwell at play in the ocean of milk; ocean of compassion, please fulfil my heart’s wish.

At Hinglaj you are Bhavani herself; your glory is boundless, beyond describing.

You are Matangi and Dhumavati; as Bhuvaneshwari and Bagalamukhi you grant happiness.

You are Bhairavi and Tara, redeemer of the world; as Chhinnamasta you remove the world’s sorrow.

Seated gracefully on your lion mount, the brave Hanuman moves ahead to receive you.

A skull and sword shine in your hands — seeing them, even death flees in fear.

Weapons and trident adorn you; at the sight, the hearts of your enemies tremble.

You reside at Nagarkot, and the three worlds resound with the drumbeat of your glory.

You slew the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and destroyed the many forms of Raktabija.

The proud king Mahishasura burdened the earth with the weight of his sins.

You took the terrible form of Kalika and destroyed him along with his entire army.

Whenever devotees fell into deep trouble, you came, Mother, to their aid.

Amarpuri and the other heavenly realms remain free of sorrow through your glory.

Your light dwells in the flame at Jwalamukhi; men and women worship you there always.

Whoever sings your praise with love and devotion is never touched by sorrow or poverty.

Whoever meditates on you wholeheartedly is freed from the cycle of birth and death.

Yogis, gods and sages proclaim that without your power, no true union (yoga) is possible.

Acharya Shankar once performed great penance and conquered desire and anger.

But he meditated day and night only on Shiva, and never once turned his thought to you.

Not having grasped the truth of Shakti, he repented deeply once his powers waned.

He then sought your refuge and proclaimed your glory — victory, victory, victory to Mother Bhavani.

The primal Mother Jagadamba was pleased, and restored his power without delay.

Mother, I am surrounded by great distress — who but you can remove my sorrow?

Desire and craving torment me endlessly; destroy in me all delusion and pride.

O great queen, destroy my enemies; I meditate on you, Bhavani, with a single-pointed mind.

Be gracious to me, kind Mother; bless me with prosperity and spiritual power.

As long as I live, may I receive your grace, and may I always sing your glory.

Whoever recites this Durga Chalisa daily attains worldly happiness and, at last, your supreme abode.

Closing Couplet: Knowing that Devidas has taken refuge in you, be gracious to him, Mother Jagadamba Bhavani.
