Sthala Puranam
Murugan explained the meaning of the Pranava mantra (Om) to his father Shiva. This is why he is called Swaminatha, the teacher of the Lord.
Brahma could not explain the mantra, so Murugan put him in prison.
Shiva's shrine is at the foot of the hill and Murugan's is on top. This shows the story.
According to the Kanda Puranam, Idumban carried a hill to Swamimalai at the request of Agastya.
