The demon Daruk attacked a Shiva devotee named Supriya and jailed him and others in Darukavana, a city under the sea. The prisoners chanted Shiva's mantra. Shiva appeared and defeated the demon.
Daruk's wife Daruka worshipped Parvati and got her powers. She moved the forest into the sea to protect the demons from the gods.
Supriya set up a lingam called Nagesha. Shiva then returned as the Jyotirlinga Nageshwar, and Parvati as Nageshwari.
