Sthala Puranam

Sage Narada gave Shiva a fruit of knowledge (gnana-palam) at Kailash. Shiva gave it to Ganesha. Murugan felt cheated and left for the Palani hills as a hermit.

Later the poet Avvaiyar came to calm him. Murugan, in disguise, shook a naaval tree to drop fruit for her.

The name comes from Tamil words for fruit (pazham), scatter (udir) and orchard (cholai), since the fruits fell at this spot.
