How to chant Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa is a forty-verse prayer to Hanuman, traditionally credited to Tulsidas. It begins with a short opening doha and closes with another. Here is a simple way to chant it, as many families do.

When to chant

Tuesday and Saturday are the days traditionally linked with Hanuman.

Many people read it in the morning after a bath. You can also read it in the evening, or whenever you need courage and calm.

How to chant, step by step

  1. Wash, and sit in a clean, quiet place.
  2. Light a lamp. Place a picture or idol of Hanuman if you have one.
  3. Take a moment to think of Hanuman and say in your mind what you are praying for.
  4. Read the opening doha, then the forty verses, then the closing doha. Go slowly and say each word clearly. The Grivam page shows the text, transliteration and meaning side by side.
  5. End with a short prayer. Many families also do an aarti.

How many times

Once is a full reading.

Some families read it 3, 7 or 11 times for a special reason, or over a set number of days. Traditions differ, and there is no single rule.

Who can chant it

Many families say anyone can read it with devotion. If your family follows its own rules, follow those.

Why people read it

People read it for courage, focus and calm. It is not a cure or a guarantee, and it does not replace your own effort or professional advice.
